Getting started with 120 HN ​

Install ​

  1. Visit the download section.
  2. Download the installer for macOS on Apple silicon, macOS on Intel, or Windows on a 64-bit Intel or AMD processor.
  3. On macOS, open the .dmg and drag 120 HN into Applications. On Windows, run the .exe installer and follow its prompts.

Linux availability has not been announced.

Sign in to your 120.dev account ​

  1. Open 120 HN, then go to Settings > Account.
  2. Select Sign in and complete sign-in in your browser. Create a 120.dev account if you do not already have one.
  3. Return to 120 HN when sign-in finishes.

Use the same 120.dev account across 120.dev apps. You can browse stories and comments without signing in. Sign in with your free account to enable AI summaries with your own OpenAI API key; OpenAI API usage is billed separately.

Connect an AI provider ​

  1. Open Settings > AI Providers.
  2. Select Configure beside OpenAI.
  3. Paste your OpenAI API key into API Key, then select Save.

120 HN selects its OpenAI summary model automatically. It does not currently offer other providers, local-model connections, or a model picker. Follow the OpenAI guide for API key setup.

Your 120.dev account and OpenAI account are separate. OpenAI API pricing, limits, and privacy terms apply to summary requests.

Use summaries ​

  1. Open a story.
  2. Select Summarize story content for the article or Summarize story comments for the discussion.
  3. Read the result in the conversation pane. Review generated summaries against the source before relying on them.

Internet access ​

Browsing Hacker News, opening linked articles, and generating summaries require an internet connection. Downloads, account sign-in, and updates also require internet access, and you may need to reconnect periodically to refresh account access.
